As part of our ongoing focus on Character Education at Cinnaminson High School, each month we choose an attribute as our focus. For the month of FEBRUARY, we will be working on PERSEVERANCE.
Perseverance is the quality that allows someone to continue trying to do something even though it is difficult. It is the ability to set goals and work hard to achieve them. To pursue worthy objectives with determination and patience while exhibiting strength and courage when confronted with failure demonstrates perseverance.
Here are ways to demonstrate perseverance:
- Stay after school for extra help in a class where you struggle.
- Complete all assignments in a class regardless of how challenging you find them.
- Try a new sport or skill that is difficult and don’t quit.
- Study and work hard to improve your grades.
- Spend hours practicing to play an instrument.
- Always finish what you start. Do not give up when things get tough.
- Try something again, even if you failed the first time.
- Show commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks.
Please help us by encouraging your child(ren) to demonstrate these simple acts each month. We look forward to fostering a culture of Commitment, Honor, and Spirit at CHS!

January ended with a celebration of Muslim heritage with a museum trip, speakers' panel, and dinner sponsored by the Cinnaminson Education Association. The community celebration provided space for students of the CHS Muslim Affinity Group to share the culture of Islam with attendees, and with Ramadan fast approaching on February 17th, helpful tips to support fellow students, co-workers, neighbors, and community members during the 30-day observation of Ramadan.
February is Black History Month in the United States - a formal and intentional time to lift the excellence and resilience of all African American peoples and their diverse heritage. This month-long celebration serves as a reminder to continue pursuing our goals, uplifting our communities, and continue creating change for future generations. The High School Equity Committee along with the students of the Young Men and Young Women of Color Affinity groups are planning an amazing event to celebrate the 100th year of Black History Month in America honoring the stories of the past, recognizing the achievements of the peoples of the African Diaspora, and learning about their perseverance and bravery in the fight for the rights and privileges we enjoy today.
While lifting Black history, it’s important to recognize that the story of African Americans begins with the rich history of Africa. Africans are a people from great wealth, innovation, and exploration long before the transatlantic slave trade. Pre-colonial African empires such as Mali, Ghana, and Songhai thrived with vast trade networks, advanced education systems, and groundbreaking inventions. African societies created and maintained rich traditions in art, science, mathematics, and governance. Understanding this history helps to reshape the narrative and recognize that African Americans are descendants of kings and queens, scholars and pioneers.
Black History Month is a time for learning, reflection, and celebration at CHS. And this year we celebrate 100 years since the first observation of Black History Month in America. At CHS, we engage in various activities to recognize and celebrate the achievements and culture of Africa and the African American community. Observing our students actively participate and delve deeper into this crucial facet of American history strengthens the Be Love community in our school and Cinnaminson at large. As we move into March, we prepare to celebrate Women's History Month and look forward to sharing those activities with you in April's report. As always, the CHS Equity committee welcomes your questions. Kindly direct them to the CHS Equity committee chairs whose contact information is below the signature line.
With Peace and Pirate Pride, Monique Bouggess and Kim Mauroff CHS Equity Chairpersons

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD is a highly genetic, brain-based syndrome that has to do with the regulation of a particular set of brain functions and related behaviors.
These brain operations are collectively referred to as “executive functioning skills” and include important functions such as attention, concentration, memory, motivation and effort, learning from mistakes, impulsivity, hyperactivity, organization, and social skills. There are various contributing factors that play a role in these challenges including chemical and structural differences in the brain as well as genetics. The executive function impairments that occur in ADHD individuals result in problems with staying organized, time keeping, excessive procrastination, maintaining concentration, paying attention, ignoring distractions, regulating emotions, and remembering details.
Brain Structure & Function Research has shown that some structures in the brain in children with ADHD can be smaller than those areas of the brain in children without ADHD. For many years, research showed there were clear structural differences in the ADHD brain. Parts of the frontal lobe may mature a few years later in people with ADHD. The amygdala and hippocampus are also smaller in the brains of people with ADHD. These areas are responsible for emotional processing and impulsivity. One study found that children with ADHD do not have the same connections between the frontal cortex of the brain and visual processing area. This means that the ADHD brain processes information differently than a non-ADHD brain. As of 2019, ADHD was estimated to affect 84.7 million people globally. Diagnosis It is recommended that healthcare providers ask parents, teachers, and other adults who care for the child about the child’s behavior in different settings, like at home, school, or with peers. The healthcare provider should also determine whether the child has another condition that can either explain the symptoms better, or that occurs at the same time as ADHD. Process Healthcare providers use the guidelines to help diagnose ADHD. This diagnostic standard helps ensure that people are appropriately diagnosed and treated for ADHD. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can't be diagnosed with a physical test, like a blood test or an X-ray. Instead, a health professional uses an evaluation process to diagnose ADHD. During the evaluation, a professional gathers information about you or the child to determin |

If your child is absent or late to school, written verification to satisfy the requirements of the attendance policy must be submitted to the Attendance Office within two school days, by 8:00 AM on the third day, if the request of the absence is to be considered excused. This is a particular concern when calculating Winner’s Circle. |

For those driving children to and from school each morning, please ensure that you follow all posted speed limits and drive safely through the surrounding neighborhoods when driving to and from school each day. We all are responsible for ensuring all children arrive at their respective schools safely each morning. |
Please remember that students are to be dropped off in the lane in front of the school only. Students are not to be dropped off in the parking lot. We want to make sure that students arrive at school as safely and efficiently as possible. Dropping off students in the parking lot increases the interactions between cars and students and delays the main drop-off line as more students need to cross the drop-off lane in the crosswalk. |

ESEA Section 8528 outlines provisions that give military recruiters the same access to secondary school students as recruiters from postsecondary institutions or prospective employers (e.g., college fairs, job fairs) and, when requested, requires LEAs to provide students’ names, addresses, electronic mail addresses, and telephone numbers to military recruiters. Parents who do not wish the district to provide name, address, and email information with military recruiters must notify the school in writing. A sample opt-out letter is available at the following link:

For the safety of your children, we will be requiring that when a student is released from school on an Early Dismissal for any reason, any person (including the parent) picking up your child must present photo identification. As a reminder, we will only release your child to a parent/guardian or emergency contact. Again, this is for the safety of your children. |
|
Parents who are picking up your child/children after practice/games, please do not park and wait in the lane of traffic in front of the gymnasium. Please park in the parking lot and wait for your child. Parking in the lane of traffic causes safety issues on many levels. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter. |
